Colorblock Sweater with Oaklynn from Made for Mermaids.

I already shared about the Made for Mermaids Oaklynn sweater I made for my daughter...but I’m going to be using this pattern a ton, so here I am sharing it again.

I had dreams of this sweater I found on Pinterest and found some scraps of waffle knit in my stash that I could use to make it happen.

I used the crew neck color block with the waistband and cuffs to achieve the same Colorblocking effect as my inspiration.

I followed the pattern without modifications. My only tip is to practice adjusting your machine settings to avoid the waviness in the seams if you are using waffle knit. I didn’t test ahead and I cannot steam out those waves…but I did perfect it on the next sweater I made.

SOS Pants from Patterns for Pirates

Patterns for Pirates revamped and re-released the SOS Pants a little over year ago and after nearly a year in maternity clothes (plus post partum) I felt really ready for real pants. Or at least pull-on pants with a little stretchy forgiveness.

I made 3 pairs in stretch twill and one pair in stretch french terry.

I’m really happy with the fit straight out of the package, my only alteration here is for height, I can see that I probably need to remove more, but I am trying to be less nit-picky with my makes.

Bek_Adams_XLWaist_LHip_MLeg_SKinny_163601

The white pair was my first muslin and the orange was maybe my second? This was during testing, so the fit is improving from the changes to the pattern itself and also to me taking height out more accurately.

20181020_181614

I decided after this pair to try using stretch mesh to line the pockets to prevent lines showing from the pockets.

Bek_Adams_SOS_FrenchTerry_161849

The stretch mesh pocket lining was a success, as you can see the pocket lines are much less visible on this stretch French Terry pair.

Speaking of French Terry, I usually shop in Fashion District in LA. If you are a local or are heading to the area, you definitely want to check the tips for navigating the district. If you are ordering fabric you are going to need: as little as 1 1/2 yards to as much 2 5/8 (depending on options you choose and your size)

P4P is always great at beautiful, quick construction patterns and I love that! It really helps for boosting your handmade wardrobe quickly.

The SOS Pants are an intermediate sewing pattern in knit with skinny and straight leg option! Skinny leg option is fitted throughout leg to ankle. Straight leg option is fitted through hip/booty, then loose/straight through leg for a flattering and dressier option. Both options include knit/enclosed elastic waistband, back yokes, front and back pocket options. Suggested fabrics are ponte roma and medium/heavy weight jegging denim knit.

For the detail oriented seamstresses out there: I determined my size using the pattern chart, I am an XL waist graded to L in the hips and M in the legs (My current measurements are 36 Overbust, 41 Bust, 33 High Waist, 41 hips). I did my standard height adjustments to account for my 5′-2″ frame as the pattern is drafted for 5′–5″.

I’d love if you would stay tuned here, or follow me on IG @clothed.in.vermillion so that we can share our sewing projects, tips and tricks with each other.

RuLo from George and Ginger Patterns

George and Ginger Patterns just released the RuLo and this on-trend boho pattern is a winner.

SONY DSC

I applied for the opportunity to test this pattern for Kristi and I could not believe I was selected. Her patterns are famous for being well-drafted and her kindness to her huge following speaks volumes. During testing we were all surprised how may options Kristi offered, it seriously could have been 2 equally amazing patterns.

image_eda1f76f-6765-4c68-93fb-2db7e200e9c4_1024x1024@2x

Let me allow the pattern description to give you all the details:  “The RuLo is packed with amazing options!  Choose from oversized dolman and regular crop, top, tunic and dress styles…and single tier bell, double tier bell, triple tier bell, full bell and basic sleeves!  With added features like ties and shoulder ruffles, you can mix and match your favorites for endless possibilities! ”

SONY DSC

I broke away from my usual shopping for this trip and hit up the National City Swap Meet for all the fabrics I used on RuLo.  Check it out if you are in San Diego! It’s awesome.

SONY DSC

For this top with 2-tiered bell sleeve, I used stretch mesh and I love it SO much. I know I am going to live in it during the hot summer months coming all too quickly.

Suggested fabric for this top/dress:  2-way sweater knit with drape and at least 50% stretch.  Any knit with 50% stretch will work, but may not give the same results.  Any fabric, including woven, can be used for the ties. .

dsc08906.jpg

..as you can see my extra stretchy mesh does pull off my shoulder a bit, next time I use the mesh I will make my neckline a tad smaller. But I love an open neckline, so I don’t mind this one.

SONY DSC

For the detail oriented seamstresses out there: I graded between sized 14 and 16 (My
current measurements are 36 Overbust, 41 Bust, 33 High Waist, 41 hips) and did my standard height adjustments to account for my 5′-2″ frame as the pattern is drafted for 5′–6″.

Hurry and grab the RuLo on sale through 1/26/2018 ONLY (although with all the options it is still a bargain at full price)

RuLo Dolman Top from George and Ginger Patterns

Kristi from George and Ginger Patterns just released the RuLo and this on-trend boho pattern is a winner. “The RuLo is packed with amazing options!  Choose from oversized dolman and regular crop, top, tunic and dress styles…and single tier bell, double tier bell, triple tier bell, full bell and basic sleeves!  With added features like ties and shoulder ruffles, you can mix and match your favorites for endless possibilities! ”

image_eda1f76f-6765-4c68-93fb-2db7e200e9c4_1024x1024@2x.jpg

As soon as I had a chance, I tried the oversized Dolman option and it is casual festival wear fabulous…or at least it makes me feel like I could wear this to a festival, even though I am probably just going to be sitting at home drinking coffee and homeschooling.

DSC08900.jpg

I have no idea what this fabric is or where it came from, so don’t ask. LOL. But it is some kind of crepe jersey ( I may be inventing terms here, but I swear I have heard of that) The pattern suggests ” 2-way sweater knit with drape and at least 50% stretch”  and this does have 2-way stretch, so I’ve got to be close.

SONY DSC

I kept this dolman true to my measured size for the sake of testing, in the future I will probably size down, even though the intended fit for the dolman is oversized. I think this is just a bit bigger than intended. Selecting patterns for my bust size always yields too large results as my bust measurement is larger than is standard for my upper bust/ shoulder measurements.

SONY DSC

But I will totally be wearing this one extra-oversized.

SONY DSC

I also made two other RuLos because I LOVE this pattern so much. You can find info on my dress here and my stretch mesh top (is coming)

For the detail oriented seamstresses out there: I graded between sized 14 and 16 (My

RuLo Dress from George and Ginger Patterns

Kristi from George and Ginger Patterns just released the RuLo and this on-trend boho pattern is a winner. (and by the way she was also prepping for her first show at New York Fashion Week while she was working on this pattern! Isn’t she incredible?)

My first chance to sew it up, I went with the dress length and full bell sleeve options.

RagDoll Raglan from Patterns for Pirates

Patterns for Pirates  has got us covered with the changing seasons and the cooler weather. The new RagDoll Raglan is just MADE for cozy coffee drinking, and book reading. But I also love a slouchy tee or tunic to get me through basically EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

SONY DSC

I’m in the stage of life where I am a mom of 3 little ones, so I can use any extra ease a pattern will give me.

SONY DSC

If you love pattern mixing, you are going to LOVE this pattern for showcasing beautiful fabrics and unexpected pairings.  This new pattern is described as “straight through the body and loose fit throughout, besides being fitted at the lower arms. It has a wide, low neckline … with a thicker than average neckband. If you use a very stretchy fabric you can pull the wide neckline off one shoulder…” and it is perfect for styling with slim fit pants, leggings, or pencil skirts.

SONY DSC

I am unashamedly in LOVE with rayon spandex fabric and the RagDoll is perfect for it! When I started getting serious about sewing my own clothes, I checked the tags on all my favorite store bought items and basically everything was a Rayon Spandex blend. So I started stocking up.  I usually shop in Fashion District in LA. f you are a local or are heading to the area, you definitely want to check the tips for navigating the district. If you are ordering fabric you are going to need: as little as 1 1/2 yards to as much 2 5/8 (depending on options you choose and your size)

P4P is always great at beautiful, quick construction patterns and I love that! It really helps for boosting your handmade wardrobe quickly and the RagDoll is also Capsule Wardrobe friendly. It is a great go-to that you will wear all the time.

SONY DSC

The RagDoll has lots of options so that you can stock your closet without looking like you are on repeat.  Half sleeve, 3/4 sleeve, long sleeve with or without cuffs. Shirt and tunic length come with a curve and there is also a banded top length (that hits between a shirt and tunic length). Lastly there is dress length for a casual t-shirt dress look. The open back option is a really nice way to take my mom uniform (a black or grey tunic) up a notch and I really like how it finishes.

SONY DSC

For the detail oriented seamstresses out there: I determined my size using the pattern chart, I am an XL graded to L in the hips (My current measurements are 36 Overbust, 41 Bust, 33 High Waist, 41 hips). I did my standard height adjustments to account for my 5′-2″ frame as the pattern is drafted for 5′–5″.

Boutique Boho Catherine from Made for Mermaids

Made for Mermaids just released the Catherine Pattern set and this quick and beautiful sew just makes my heart happy. And my baby’s heart happy. Win-Win. (or if you are a Michael Scott fan, then we can call it a Win-Win-Win, because we all win.)

SONY DSC

Any excuse to sew up a Catherine and I am going to take it! So……..when my beautiful little boho babe decided to paint her cream floral Catherine with one of my lipsticks 45 minutes before we had to leave, I jumped at the challenge to sew up another as fast as I could.

Boom. Even had plenty of time to stop for coffee on our way.

23116678_10103873397956798_6071358309840121244_o.jpg

Now, pattern mixing is not my forte, but we both love how this one turned out! I went with the square neckline, regular flounce sleeve, and ruffled dress options.

SONY DSC

This version is made with a floral brushed poly and leopard rayon spandex both from JB Fabrics in Downtown LA (tips for navigating the district and favorite stops along the way)

SONY DSC

That neckline is just gorgeous!

SONY DSC

(please excuse the lining showing a little, I was in a hurry and forgot to under-stitch, as per pattern instructions)

SONY DSC

I’ll be sharing more, but you can also see what others are sewing in the Made for Mermaids Facebook Group.

Don’t forget all the options available! You get 3 necklines, 5+sleeves,  3 lengths and 3 hem styles. Plus all the hacks and mods that the pattern designers and fellow sewcialists’ posts in the facebook group make this pattern a workhorse.

SONY DSC

For the detail oriented seamstresses out there: My daughter is wearing a size 2, she has a 21″ chest measurement and is age 3. And I made no pattern modifications, however, I sewed this dress up early during testing and a little bit of length was added to the bodice for the ruffle dress option to make the dress just a touch longer.

Catherine, Queen of Flounce

Made for Mermaids just released the Catherine Pattern set . The classic style lines and the many options available make the Catherine a cute little style chameleon. I’ll be sharing here, but you can also see what others are sewing in the Made for Mermaids Facebook Group.

SONY DSC

Catherine is packed with options. You get 3 necklines, 5+sleeves,  3 lengths and 3 hem styles. Plus all the hacks and mods that the pattern designers and fellow sewcialists’ post in the facebook group make this pattern a workhorse.

My favorite feature from the Catherine Patterns is the definitely the sleeve flounce (and the unlined lace bodice is pretty amazing too!).

SONY DSC

Like every pattern from the Mermaids, the construction of Catherine is quick and easy with plenty of photos in the printable pdf pattern to help guide you.

SONY DSC

My girl loves beautiful dresses but they have to be comfortable. And this pattern meets all her criteria!

SONY DSC

This version is made with a floral brushed poly, cream stretch lace, and rayon spandex for the neck binding and ruffle lining.

SONY DSC

In the end the most important thing is always that twirl factor.

SONY DSC

Fabrics for this sew came from JB Fabrics in Downtown LA (tips for navigating the district and favorite stops along the way)

Little Black Ballet Top

Even though the Patterns for Pirates  Wiggle Dress is a total bombshell as a full length gown, it also makes a great basic as well…but pictures speak louder than words.

22713438_10103893953497863_7488442217994051676_o

The Wiggle Dress PDF Pattern  makes an excellent basic ballet top. Ballet, like classical music, is just NEVER going to go out of style.  And since my love for black Cotton-Lycra runs deep (even though it is not a recommended fabric for this pattern) I decided to give it a try.

SONY DSC

The results are everything I was hoping for. A great basic, something quick and easy to grab out of the closet.

SONY DSC

If you remember the Wiggle is a lightening fast sew, so when we decided to run out on a family shopping trip and I didn’t feel like digging through laundry. I opted to see how quickly I could make a Wiggle Top. The answer was: 40 minutes.

Which actually was a lot longer than it should have taken. All 3 of my babes were interupting so that I could help them get ready, I had to change thread color on my serger and coverstitch (that’s reathreading 7 spools of thread), and I had to unpick the neckline and re-do it a little.

SONY DSC

All-in-all, I think this could easily be a 20 minute top if you want to have a race sometime. haha!

And it lends itself well to being dressed up or dressed down. This weekend, I styled it with this skirt…just in case someone didn’t know I was ballet inspired. (Sorry, I forgot to snap a pic of the wiggle plus this one.)

For the detail oriented seamstresses out there: I used XL graded to L in the hips (My
current measurements are 36 Overbust, 41 Bust, 33 High Waist, 41 hips) and did my standard height adjustments to account for my 5′-2″ frame as the pattern is drafted for 5′–5″. My large stash of black cotton lycra was picked up at one of my favorite spots in the Fashion District in Downtown LA.  (tips for navigating the district and favorite stops along the way
