RuLo from George and Ginger Patterns

George and Ginger Patterns just released the RuLo and this on-trend boho pattern is a winner.

SONY DSC

I applied for the opportunity to test this pattern for Kristi and I could not believe I was selected. Her patterns are famous for being well-drafted and her kindness to her huge following speaks volumes. During testing we were all surprised how may options Kristi offered, it seriously could have been 2 equally amazing patterns.

image_eda1f76f-6765-4c68-93fb-2db7e200e9c4_1024x1024@2x

Let me allow the pattern description to give you all the details:  “The RuLo is packed with amazing options!  Choose from oversized dolman and regular crop, top, tunic and dress styles…and single tier bell, double tier bell, triple tier bell, full bell and basic sleeves!  With added features like ties and shoulder ruffles, you can mix and match your favorites for endless possibilities! ”

SONY DSC

I broke away from my usual shopping for this trip and hit up the National City Swap Meet for all the fabrics I used on RuLo.  Check it out if you are in San Diego! It’s awesome.

SONY DSC

For this top with 2-tiered bell sleeve, I used stretch mesh and I love it SO much. I know I am going to live in it during the hot summer months coming all too quickly.

Suggested fabric for this top/dress:  2-way sweater knit with drape and at least 50% stretch.  Any knit with 50% stretch will work, but may not give the same results.  Any fabric, including woven, can be used for the ties. .

dsc08906.jpg

..as you can see my extra stretchy mesh does pull off my shoulder a bit, next time I use the mesh I will make my neckline a tad smaller. But I love an open neckline, so I don’t mind this one.

SONY DSC

For the detail oriented seamstresses out there: I graded between sized 14 and 16 (My
current measurements are 36 Overbust, 41 Bust, 33 High Waist, 41 hips) and did my standard height adjustments to account for my 5′-2″ frame as the pattern is drafted for 5′–6″.

Hurry and grab the RuLo on sale through 1/26/2018 ONLY (although with all the options it is still a bargain at full price)

I’d love if you would stay tuned here, or follow me on IG @clothed.in.vermillion to check-out all the Wiggles I have sewn for my closet!

RuLo Dolman Top from George and Ginger Patterns

Kristi from George and Ginger Patterns just released the RuLo and this on-trend boho pattern is a winner. “The RuLo is packed with amazing options!  Choose from oversized dolman and regular crop, top, tunic and dress styles…and single tier bell, double tier bell, triple tier bell, full bell and basic sleeves!  With added features like ties and shoulder ruffles, you can mix and match your favorites for endless possibilities! ”

image_eda1f76f-6765-4c68-93fb-2db7e200e9c4_1024x1024@2x.jpg

As soon as I had a chance, I tried the oversized Dolman option and it is casual festival wear fabulous…or at least it makes me feel like I could wear this to a festival, even though I am probably just going to be sitting at home drinking coffee and homeschooling.

DSC08900.jpg

I have no idea what this fabric is or where it came from, so don’t ask. LOL. But it is some kind of crepe jersey ( I may be inventing terms here, but I swear I have heard of that) The pattern suggests ” 2-way sweater knit with drape and at least 50% stretch”  and this does have 2-way stretch, so I’ve got to be close.

SONY DSC

I kept this dolman true to my measured size for the sake of testing, in the future I will probably size down, even though the intended fit for the dolman is oversized. I think this is just a bit bigger than intended. Selecting patterns for my bust size always yields too large results as my bust measurement is larger than is standard for my upper bust/ shoulder measurements.

SONY DSC

But I will totally be wearing this one extra-oversized.

SONY DSC

I also made two other RuLos because I LOVE this pattern so much. You can find info on my dress here and my stretch mesh top (is coming)

For the detail oriented seamstresses out there: I graded between sized 14 and 16 (My

Fabric used: Some kind of Mystery Crepe Rayon Spandex
Did you use the recommended fabrics in the pattern: Yes and No. It is only a 2-way stretch Fabric, but the pattern does call for sweater knits.
Did you alter the pattern in any way?  Shortened for my 5′-2″ frame

RuLo Dress from George and Ginger Patterns

Kristi from George and Ginger Patterns just released the RuLo and this on-trend boho pattern is a winner. (and by the way she was also prepping for her first show at New York Fashion Week while she was working on this pattern! Isn’t she incredible?)

My first chance to sew it up, I went with the dress length and full bell sleeve options.

I grabbed all my fabrics for the RuLo from National City Swap Meet.  Check it out if you are in San Diego! It’s awesome.

I used stretch French Terry for this version and as the pattern suggests ” 2-way sweater knit with drape and at least 50% stretch”  I think I am pretty close to intended fit here.

Boutique Boho Catherine from Made for Mermaids

Made for Mermaids just released the Catherine Pattern set and this quick and beautiful sew just makes my heart happy. And my baby’s heart happy. Win-Win. (or if you are a Michael Scott fan, then we can call it a Win-Win-Win, because we all win.)

SONY DSC

Any excuse to sew up a Catherine and I am going to take it! So……..when my beautiful little boho babe decided to paint her cream floral Catherine with one of my lipsticks 45 minutes before we had to leave, I jumped at the challenge to sew up another as fast as I could.

Boom. Even had plenty of time to stop for coffee on our way.

23116678_10103873397956798_6071358309840121244_o.jpg

Now, pattern mixing is not my forte, but we both love how this one turned out! I went with the square neckline, regular flounce sleeve, and ruffled dress options.

SONY DSC

This version is made with a floral brushed poly and leopard rayon spandex both from JB Fabrics in Downtown LA (tips for navigating the district and favorite stops along the way)

SONY DSC

That neckline is just gorgeous!

SONY DSC

(please excuse the lining showing a little, I was in a hurry and forgot to under-stitch, as per pattern instructions)

SONY DSC

I’ll be sharing more, but you can also see what others are sewing in the Made for Mermaids Facebook Group.

Don’t forget all the options available! You get 3 necklines, 5+sleeves,  3 lengths and 3 hem styles. Plus all the hacks and mods that the pattern designers and fellow sewcialists’ posts in the facebook group make this pattern a workhorse.

SONY DSC

For the detail oriented seamstresses out there: My daughter is wearing a size 2, she has a 21″ chest measurement and is age 3. And I made no pattern modifications, however, I sewed this dress up early during testing and a little bit of length was added to the bodice for the ruffle dress option to make the dress just a touch longer.

Hurry and checkout all Catherine Release party fun and stay tuned as the Mermaids prep for their 40K Party! You can view photos of all the options available, checkout the mods, that will give you even more options (and snag the pattern at a discount, of course!) at Made for Mermaids

Catherine, Queen of Flounce

Made for Mermaids just released the Catherine Pattern set . The classic style lines and the many options available make the Catherine a cute little style chameleon. I’ll be sharing here, but you can also see what others are sewing in the Made for Mermaids Facebook Group.

SONY DSC

Catherine is packed with options. You get 3 necklines, 5+sleeves,  3 lengths and 3 hem styles. Plus all the hacks and mods that the pattern designers and fellow sewcialists’ post in the facebook group make this pattern a workhorse.

My favorite feature from the Catherine Patterns is the definitely the sleeve flounce (and the unlined lace bodice is pretty amazing too!).

SONY DSC

Like every pattern from the Mermaids, the construction of Catherine is quick and easy with plenty of photos in the printable pdf pattern to help guide you.

SONY DSC

My girl loves beautiful dresses but they have to be comfortable. And this pattern meets all her criteria!

SONY DSC

This version is made with a floral brushed poly, cream stretch lace, and rayon spandex for the neck binding and ruffle lining.

SONY DSC

In the end the most important thing is always that twirl factor.

SONY DSC

Fabrics for this sew came from JB Fabrics in Downtown LA (tips for navigating the district and favorite stops along the way)

Wiggle Fit Raglan

It’s no secret that I love the Patterns for Pirates Wiggle Dress PDF Pattern.

22713438_10103893953497863_7488442217994051676_o

But I also love a good pattern mash/mod to get a lot of life out of my patterns.

I browsed my Pinterest boards and the Wiggle Fit Raglan was born.

20171015_020548

This is super simple.

Grab the Slim Fit Raglan Pattern  The front on this mod is super straight forward, you cut the Slim Fit Raglan Sleeves and neckbands (armbands if applicable). And then for the bodice I cut the SFR from the neckline down to the the armpit and lined up my Wiggle Dress at the armsyce/armpit point (what is that called?) and used the wiggle all the way down to the above knee length.

WFR

Rear view is exactly the same but you will need to account for the seamed back piece, because you definitely want to hold onto the built-in sway back adjustment on the Wiggle.

wfrk20171027_130122

Construction is completed by method described in the patterns. I used each pattern instruction where applicable.

20171014_022206 (1)

The Rayon Spandex fabrics for this dress came from the Fashion District in Downtown LA .  My husband bought me a bolt of the leopard rayon spandex from JB Textiles and the stripes came from Angel Textiles. I love the pattern mixing here. I’ve already said, the Wiggle, in all it’s forms, is incredibly comfortable.  But this is one you can wear all day, all around town. Which is why I have worn it a few times already.

This morning I was tired and in a hurry, I knew it would make up for my no-makeup and yesterday’s hair. I paired it with a tunic length Cocoon Cardigan with long bands (that has also been modified to have the Patterns for Pirates Henley inset Sleeve).

20171027_130009

20171027_130012

….I wore this without shape wear as I have seen a lot of curious questions in the Patterns for Pirates Facebook Group.

Some more styling ideas I found for you on my Pinterest boards.

Wiggle Dress: Full Length Gown

When you need something extra special in a hurry, the Patterns for Pirates Wiggle Dress PDF Pattern is going to be your best friend.

22713438_10103893953497863_7488442217994051676_o

I knew I wanted to give the full length option a try because it just looked incredible on every single person that had already sewn it! I opted for the 3/4 Sleeve as it is my personal favorite length for my body shape and of course went off-the-shoulder because…I cannot stop sewing the off-the-shoulder option.

closeup.jpg

I checked my stash from my last trip to the Fashion District in Downtown LA  and when I couldn’t decide which fabric to pick, I asked some of the ladies from the Patterns for Pirates Facebook Group to pick for me. Someone picked this plaid Liverpool from Angel Textiles and the result is pretty awesome. It’s just perfect for the coming Holiday season. Fabric choices are everything and this plaid dressed it down a little. If you are going someplace extra special check out the more formal fabric options that have been sewn up.

And I’ve got to say, that neckline DOES NOT BUDGE.  I can promise you, you will not need to adjust all day/night long! Don’t worry about sewing it either, it finishes beautifully and quite easily.

20171011_123058(0)

The Wiggle, in all it’s forms, is also incredibly comfortable.  Like, seriously, The days I wear one, I do not find the need to change when I get home to relax, because I am already THAT comfortable. I know you want to roll your eyes at that…because we all have clothes that we wear the second we come home. But seriously, I am finding myself wearing the Wiggle from morning to night.

20171011_123836 copy

…and can we take a minute to talk about the back shaping again? It is going to do you ALL KINDS of favors. The pattern comes with a built in sway back adjustment so it will hug your curves.

20171011_123111_c copy

…and in my case make me feel like some kind of Christmas Tree Farm Model. LOL!

Wiggle Dress: new from Patterns for Pirates

Patterns for Pirates just released the Wiggle Dress and it is the cocktail/party/date dress of dreams!

FINALS

I was over the moon excited (and totally shocked) to be given the opportunity to test this pattern. I love to sew for my family and friends and trying new patterns, techniques, designers, and fabrics really fuels me. I am a creature of habit and have been on a pretty strict diet of Rayon Spandex and Cotton Lycra lately. The chance to work with a stable knit, in a killer curvy silhouette, for the pattern company that introduced me to PDF patterns made my heart aflutter.

22713438_10103893953497863_7488442217994051676_o

The Wiggle Dress PDF Pattern is positively packed. A modern-vintage dress with mega wow factor and SO. Many. Options. I headed straight to the Fashion District in Downtown LA all on my own (this is bordering on a miracle, as I have 3 beautiful little miracles, in their own right, attached at my hip most days) and stocked up. Ponte, Crushed Velvet, Liverpool, and Scuba all came home with me. (tips for navigating the district and favorite stops along the way)

sideview

Let me tell you, the Wiggle dress was so much more than I expected!  After 3 babies, and feeling a little plump lately, I was worried this curve-hugging dress wouldn’t do me any favors. But it was love at first wear. The fit. The fabrics. Something magical is happening here.  (a little help from the shape-wear section helps, of course, but isn’t necessary)

FINAL

I especially LOVE the on-trend off-the-shoulder option and the shaping on those back pieces. The Wiggle is also incredibly comfortable.  Like, seriously, my husband caught me doing dishes after midnight still wearing the WD! Plus this Liverpool from Angel Textiles is pillow-y soft and super stretchy.  If you’ve never tried Liverpool, add it to your list!

Bonus: It is also a lightening fast sew! P4P is always amazing at beautiful, quick construction patterns and I love that!

Made for Mermaids Ava: Scuba Dress

Made for Mermaids Ava and the Mama Ava  Patterns have been favorites in our home since their release last year. It is just the perfect bodice for my daughter and fits well according to her measurements. Here is my baby girl last fall in the mid-length sleeve, curved tunic option.

Ava comes together so quickly and finishes beautifully. It is also a work horse in our house. I know it well and often use it when I need to sew something up quick for my babe.

She loves beautiful florals and when she saw this scuba come home from Angel Textiles after a trip to the Downtown LA Fashion District, I knew I wanted to sew it up quick. So I grabbed Ava and got to work to make this beautiful little dress.

SONY DSC

I used the bodice as is, with those mid-length sleeves again, because I love the length on her. And when cutting, I cropped the bodice about 3 inches below the armsyce. Then just cut 2 rectangles of leftover fabric for the front and back of the skirt. Each rectangle is cut to correspond with the front and back bodice pieces at approx. 1.75 times the width (and as long as desired). Sew up the side seams. Pin bodice and skirt side seams, pin center front and center back and serge the skirt to the bodice pulling the bodice to fit the skirt piece (I highly recommend adding clear elastic while serging to help support the weight of the skirt and to gather it in).

SONY DSC

Instead of fighting with a scuba neckband, I opted to finished with Fold Over Elastic. (I find the best deals for FOE on Ebay). I like to baste it on with a zig-zag stitch to the wrong side of the fabric, then fold over and triple zig–zag top stitch.

SONY DSC

Hem and you are done!  It’s perfect for special occasions or dress up and comfortable enough for playtime.

SONY DSC

I know she will get a lot of use out of this dress and that we will get even more use out of the Ava pattern. (And stay tuned to see how I used this fabric to sew something awesome for myself from the newest Patterns for Pirates Pattern about to drop!)

SONY DSCAnd in case your little is creative with the scissors too… you might be interested in knowing that I picked up this bow in a rainbow set of 50 from Amazon and they are doing the trick to kinda disguise the Owen Wilson haircut she gave herself.
